Background

Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan was arrested on August 10, 2013, under the Information and Communication Technology Act in relation to a fact-finding report published on June 10, 2013 by Odhikar. The report uncovered human rights abuses allegedly committed during an operation carried out on May 5-6, 2013 by law enforcement agencies against a rally by the Islamist organization Hefazat-e Islam.

Adilur Rahman Khan is the Secretary of the Bangladesh-based human rights group Odhikar, a member of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). He is also an active member of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT).

Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan is charged under clauses 1 and 2 of Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006 for "publishing false images and information and disrupting the law and order situation of the country."

He is incarcerated at Kashimpur jail where he has been awaiting trial since August 13, 2013 while a prosecutor for the so-called "Cyber Crimes Tribunal" is yet to be appointed.

His bail application was rejected once by the magistrate court and twice by the cyber crimes tribunal.

Latest

On October 8th 2013 the High Court Division of Supreme Court of Bangladesh granted Adilur Rahman Khan ad-interim bail. He was released on bail for 6 months from Kashimpur Jail on 11 October 2013.

Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan is due to appear before the Cyber Crimes Tribunal on November 10, 2013.
