From Wikipedia: Alaa Ahmed Abd El Fattah (Arabic: علاء أحمد سيف الإسلام عبدالفتاح‎) is a prominent Egyptian blogger, software developer, and democracy activist. He is known for co-founding (along with wife Manal) the Egyptian blog aggregator "Manalaa". He has been active in developing Arabic-language versions of important software and platforms.

His father, Ahmad Seif, is a prominent lawyer and manager of Hesham Mubarak Law Centre, and his mother, Prof. Laila Suief, is a mathematics professor in Cairo University and a political activist.

On Sunday, May 7, 2006, he was arrested during a peaceful protest which spoke out on behalf of an independent Egyptian judiciary. His arrest, along with that of several other bloggers and democracy activists, spurred a protest by others around the world, some of whom created a new blog, "Free Alaa", devoted to calling for his release from jail.

Alaa Abd El Fattah was released on Tuesday June 20, 2006, after spending 45 days in jail. His wife Manal was quoted as saying in media reports (The Independent, UK): "There's no going back now, we'll definitely be continuing our activities."

On October 30, 2011, Abd El Fattah was detained again after refusing to be interrogated by the interim military government.  His initial fifteen-day sentence was then extended on November 13 for another fifteen days.

Alaa Abdel Fattah has reportedly been released on Sunday December 25, after being detained since 30 October, although the charges against him have not been dropped, according to his father and lawyer.
