Beshoy Kamil Kamel

Beshoy Kamil Kamel is an Egyptian Coptic-Christian school teacher from the Governorate of Sohag. He was arrested on July 30, 2012 for sharing cartoons on a Facebook page. Those allegedly defamed the Islamic faith and the Prophet Muhammad. The Egyptian citizen who filed the charges also accused Beshoy Kamel of insulting the President Morsi.
An Egyptian court found Beshoy Kamil Kamel guilty of blasphemy and defamation. Kamel was sentenced to six years in prison for insulting the Prophet Mohammed, Egypt’s president, and one of the plaintiff lawyers. Kamel has denied the charges, and his appeal was held on September 27, 2012. The Court rejected his appeal (Arabic).
Blasphemy cases have been on the rise since President Morsi came to power, denounced human right defenders.
