According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, "Ethiopian security forces arrested Nega, a prominent journalist, government critic, and dissident blogger, on accusations of involvement in a vague terrorism plot." Nega was taken to the Maekelawi Federal Detention Center and held under a provision of the anti-terrorism law that allows for extended detention without charge." In November, Nega was charged, along with five other journalists, for terrorism.
On June 27, 2012, Nega was convicted on dubious terrorism-related charges and sentenced, on July 13, 2012, to 18 years in prison. Supporters are calling for the charges to be thrown out.
