Fouad Mourtada was arrested on 5 February 2008, for for creating a fake profile of the king’s brother on Facebook. He was convicted on 23 February by a Casablanca court and sentenced to three years in prison for “villainous practices linked to the alleged theft" of of the Crown Prince Moulay Rachid's identity. Fouad was sentenced to 3 years of jail plus a fine of 10,000 Dirhams. Thanks to campaigning by influential Moroccan bloggers and other entities, Mourtada's case attracted international media attention and Morocco's actions were criticized harshly by journalists and human rights groups. On the evening of March 18, 2008, Fouad was released by a royal pardon after spending 43 days in jail.
