Security officials arrested website manager Hailaite Niyazi at his home in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, on October 1, 2009. On October 4, the authorities informed his family that he had been detained for endangering national security.

Niyazi, who has worked for state newspapers Xinjiang Legal News and Xinjiang Economic Daily, also managed and edited the web site Uighurbiz until June 2009.
