Makaila Nguebla, a prominent blogger from Chad (http://makaila.over-blog.com/) was expelled from Senegal where he had lived and actively been seeking political asylum since in 2005. The government of Senegal, although it never granted him political refugee status and, decided to expel Makaila after the Chadian Minister of Justice visited and met with Senegalese officials. This happened after an alleged coup attempt was thwarted by the authorities in Ndjamena.
This decision violates provisions of the UN 1951 Refugee Convention, to which Senegal is signatory. Makaila is now in Conakry, capital city of the Republic of Guinea, but is safety is not guaranteed. Global Voices interviewed Makaila shortly after his transfer. More information on his case and the legal conditions for political asylum can be found here.
