Mirsayafi, 28, author of the cultural news blog, Rooznegar, was arrested on April 22, 2008, released 41 days later on bail, then stood trial on November 22, and was charged under article 514 of the criminal code. He was freed, then detained on February 7 without warning. He was sentenced to two and half years in prison for allegedly insulting religious leaders, and engaging in “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic of Iran. He died in prison a little over one month later, on March 18, 2009. Mirsayafi was 29 years old. His brother, Amir-Parviz Mirsayafi, says was beaten to death. "Omid Reza was the first blogger to die in prison and his death reveals that getting censored is far from the worst thing that can happen to a blogger".
