Other arrests: On April 21, 2007 she was arrested at her home and later sentenced to nine months and ten days imprisonment for “disturbing public order.” Thuy was released on January 31, 2008, but remained under police surveillance. On October 8, 2009, Thuy and her husband were arrested after the police where sent to their home. She was assaulted and suffered injuries to her head. Earlier that day, Thuy travelled to Hai Phong in support of Nguyen Xuan Nghia and 5 other activists on trial for their democratic activities.

A prolific novelist and journalist, Tran Khai Thanh Thuy is a recipient of Human Rights Watch’s Hellman/Hammett Award and an Honorary Member of English PEN. A member of Bloc 8406, Vietnam’s pro-democracy movement, she is also an editor of the underground magazine To Quoc (Fatherland). Since September 2006, she has been repeatedly harassed and interrogated for writings published online critical of the government.
