Xu Wei was a reporter in Beijing before he was arrested in March 2001. He founded the "New youth association" with Yang Zili, Jin Haike and Zhang Honghai and advocated political reform by writing online articles. On September 28, 2001, they were tried by the Beijing Intermediate People's Court on charges of inciting subversion of state power. Xu was eventually sentenced to 10 year imprisonment in May 28, 2003.
